Save the Date for Adventure Ashram Partners Reception

Adventure Ashram trustees sent out a ‘save the date’ to all their Partners inviting them to a reception in September at Kensington Roof Gardens. Partners support specific Adventure Ashram projects with an annual donation of over £2,500 per year. This reception will be the first time Adventure Ashram has all its Partners at the same event and they look forward to thanking them for their support and celebrating the success of the projects in India where the health and education in the communities has been greatly improved because of Global Enduro Adventures. Odanadi rescue Nepali girl and reunite her with mother

Odanadi, the Indian based charity building the boys’ house, funded by Adventure Ashram, rescued a Nepali girl from situation of human trafficking. Shanti Tamang became a victim of trafficking after she was lured from her home with the promise of a job as an actress in Bollywood. Wanting to support her poverty stricken family inspired Shanti to go with traffickers in the hope of a bright future in film. Arriving in India with a number of other girls Shanti was later rescued by Odanadi. Through counselling provided by Odanadi Seva Trust she was able share her desperate need to go home to her mother. Mother and daughter are now happily reunited. There are millions of children affected by the human trafficking in India. Odanadi’s network is tackling individual cases like this one and leading change at state and national level. Thank you for helping Adventure Ashram support them. Letters to children in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve will be hand delivered in July

Adventure Ashram’s Fundraiser and Grant Manager, Fritha Vincent, will travel to Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in July this year. Fritha will spend a week with Solomon Daniel of Grace Charitable Trust to understand exactly how children who have their education sponsored are selected for support. Fritha is looking forward to learning more about the challenges faced by the tribal families in the area and how Adventure Ashram and our supporters can continue to help improve health and education in the area. Fritha will be spending time will all the children sponsored and can deliver any letters, photos or drawings for sponsor’s children. Health and education go hand in hand

Simply having access to an education isn’t enough. Solomon Daniel of Grace Charitable Trust understands this more than most, and so takes responsibility for the children when he discovers they are unwell. Each morning Solomon drives the school bus to pick up the children sponsored by Adventure Ashram supporters. If a child is missing he asks the other children where they are. Solomon will go back to the village to visit the unwell child and will monitor their health daily. If the situation becomes more serious, Solomon will drive the child to the local hospital and pay for treatment and medicines. Currently Solomon is caring for two of the sponsored children who are sick. The £115 donated by each child sponsor covers the cost of medical check ups and vaccinations. Thank you for to helping to keep the children healthy so they can attend school and concentrate on their lessons.

Friendships are formed through Adventure Ashram’s child sponsorship campaign

Over the last couple of months Adventure Ashram has been introducing adventurers to the children who’s education they sponsor. As part of the introduction adventurers learn the child’s name, receive a picture, finds out the child’s ambition and how they are getting on at school. Letters have already started flowing in from the children of adventurers wanting to become friends with the children living in Mudumalai, Tamil Nadu. Meet Freya Capsey, daughter of Nick Capsey, Managing Director of Global Enduro. She is holding a picture of Preethi, the child being sponsored on her behalf. Water supply and sanitation is installed in the boys house in Mysore, India

The boys will not only benefit from a new home to live in they will, for the first time, have clean running water and sanitation. The health and hygiene benefits are obvious but the sense of self worth and confidence that this brings can make such a difference not to mention the time is saves. The older boys are all busy studying for their final year exams and any time that is spare from daily duties will be used for studying. The pipes being laid is just one of the jobs in a long list that need to happen before the monsoon rains start to fall. It is a race against time but the money generated by adventurers from Karma Enduro and Enduro India has ensured that the work can happen and completion by May 2012 has become a reality. Hillingdon Borough Council shows its support for Adventurers Roy Clark, Ollie Shah and Danny Walsh

Hillingdon Council ran a feature in their monthly magazine on employees Roy, Ollie and Danny who took part in Enduro India 2012. These three adventurers are well known within the council for raising funds and supporting the work of Adventure Ashram. 2 of the services teams within Hillingdon sponsor the education of children from Mudumalai Tiger Reserve as do Roy, Ollie and Danny. Ollie describes the challenge of being one of the team, “People do tend to think it’s a bit of a ‘jolly’. For Roy and me actually working as stewards or ‘team’ it’s a very long, tiring, draining but rewarding day. With temperatures hitting 95 degrees we were riding for up to eleven hours on some days, trying to keep an eye out for all the “clients” amongst the chaos that is Indian roads. Having completed the ride a couple of years ago, we were prepared for the ride being an adventure, it’s risks, not a holiday.” Adventure Ashram sends it thanks to the adventurers that volunteer to be team leaders on Global Enduro adventurers because they are key players in enabling Adventure Ashram to make the difference it does improving health and education in the communities explored. Adventure Ashram makes the final push to complete the home for boys in Mysore

Adventure Ashram trustees, Wendy Smith and Colin Taylor, visited the Odanadi home for boys rescued from situations of human trafficking. They live in the countryside on the outskirts of Mysore, Karnataka. Wendy and Colin filmed the 3 shacks where the boys currently live. From watching the film it is easy to see how their new home, being built on the same site, will improve their standard of living dramatically. Adventure Ashram has given a grant of £68,000 to pay for the building to be completed. The aim is for the building to be finished before the monsoon rains come in May. Curry night raises £1,200 for community centre in Spiti Valley, India

Adventurer and Adventure Ashram supporter, John Dillon hosted a curry night to raise money on the back of his Enduro Himalaya adventure taking place this Summer. He is pictured here with his brothers Paul and Mark, and Tony from Little India, Barton Under Needwood. Sixty seven very special guests attended the night taking part in a raffle and enjoying music by Dave Titley. The money raised will go towards the solar eco community centre being built over the next two years in the Spiti Valley, India. Adventure Ashram has pledged to give a further £84,000 to the project. The community centre will improve the lives of the people of Spiti Valley. The children, especially, will benefit from having their community united in one place, they learn first hand how the sun’s energy can be harnessed to produce warmth and power and will have year round access to a dentist and optician. Adventure Ashram Partner, Bob Nicholson, returns to Masinagudi

Bob and his wife Shirley became Partners of our project Educating children from the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve during Karma Enduro 2011. Their donation paid for 1 year’s education for a class of 30 children and a Royal Enfield Bullet Motorbike for Solomon Daniel who runs Grace Charitable Trust. Bob recently visited Solomon in Masinagudi and went for a spin on the Bullet. Solomon is responsible for all the children sponsored by Adventure Ashram supporters. With his new motorbike he can travel quickly and easily to villages further afield, building relationships with the new families. By doing this he hopes to encourage more children into school. The children are now assured of a safe ride to school on an Adventure Ashram school bus. Our child sponsorship campaign has been a success in the short term with over 200 children sponsored for their first year. We now need to secure long term support.
